Rabbits are one of the most misunderstood pets in the UK and not enough rabbit owners understand the importance of fibre in a rabbit’s diet and the differences between feeding hay and bedding hay.

How Much Hay & Why?

Your rabbits need 85 – 90% of feeding hay & fresh grass, that’s equal to their body size every day!

✔ High in fibre, promotes digestive health
✔ Stimulates chewing, good for dental health
✔ Encourages bunnies to forage for emotional health

#HopToHay

The PDSA Animal Wellbeing 2016 report highlighted that only 30% of owners provide their rabbits with constant access to hay for eating. We want to ensure that alongside their bedding hay, which should be used for sleeping and comfort only, rabbits are being provided with good quality feeding hay which is more tasty and will help to support their digestive and dental health. By doing so, we’re helping more rabbits lead healthier and hoppier lives!

RAW 2017 wants to change this. The primary objective of this year’s campaign is to encourage rabbits and their owners to #HoptoHay by highlighting the important role that good quality feeding hay plays in a rabbit’s diet and raising awareness and understanding around the differences between feeding hay and bedding hay. Throughout June, many vets across the UK are offering free healthcare checks for rabbits, alongside guidance and support for rabbit owners as well as exclusive discounts and promotions. You can click here to be taken to our event locator page, where you’ll find further information on all of the exciting events taking place, as well as more information on the participating practices in the UK.

It’s not just vets who are getting involved – retailers, rescue centres, pet shops and even schools are joining together to help make this year’s RAW the biggest and best yet. You can help too, by telling friends, family members and other rabbit owners about Rabbit Awareness Week. Join the conversation online by using the hashtags #HoptoHay and #Raw2017 alongside your social media posts on Facebook and Twitter.

By talking to our friends, family and other rabbit owners and letting them know the importance of hay in a rabbit’s diet we can all play a part in encouraging responsible ownership and helping to better the lives of more rabbits. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s hop to it and #HoptoHay!
